French Exam Score Calculator: TCF and TEF to CLB Conversion
For Canadian immigration, your TCF or TEF scores must be converted to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) levels. This guide provides complete conversion tables for both exams and explains how CLB levels affect your immigration points.
Why CLB Matters for Immigration
IRCC uses CLB levels to standardize language ability across different tests. Your CLB scores determine:
- Express Entry CRS points for language ability
- Eligibility for various immigration programs
- Bonus points for second official language
- Citizenship language requirements
Higher CLB scores mean more points and better chances of receiving an invitation to apply.

How to Calculate Your CLB Scores
Step 1: Find Your Scores
Locate the numerical scores on your attestation for each of the four skills.
Step 2: Convert Each Skill
Use the tables above to convert each score to its CLB level. Remember:
- TCF listening/reading are out of 699
- TCF writing/speaking are out of 20
- TEF all skills are out of 450
Step 3: Record Your CLB Profile
Write out your CLB levels:
- Listening: CLB __
- Reading: CLB __
- Writing: CLB __
- Speaking: CLB __
Step 4: Identify Your Overall CLB
For many purposes, your "overall" CLB is your lowest score. If you have CLB 8-9-7-8, your overall is CLB 7.

CLB Levels and Express Entry Points
First Official Language (French)
| CLB Level | CRS Points (per ability) |
|---|---|
| CLB 10+ | 34 points |
| CLB 9 | 31 points |
| CLB 8 | 23 points |
| CLB 7 | 17 points |
| CLB 6 | 9 points |
| CLB 5 | 6 points |
| CLB 4 | 6 points |
Points are per ability (listening, reading, writing, speaking). Maximum 136 points for language if French is your first official language.
Second Official Language (French as Second)
If English is your first language and French is your second:
| CLB Level | CRS Points (per ability) |
|---|---|
| CLB 9+ | 6 points |
| CLB 7-8 | 3 points |
| CLB 5-6 | 1 point |
Maximum 24 points for second language.
Combined Language Bonus
Strong skills in both English AND French can earn additional points:
- French CLB 7+ in all skills (with English CLB 5+ in all): Up to 50 bonus points
Bilingual advantage: Candidates with strong French AND English often receive ITAs at lower CRS scores due to the combined bonus points.
Minimum CLB Requirements by Program
| Program | Minimum CLB |
|---|---|
| Federal Skilled Worker | CLB 7 all skills |
| Canadian Experience Class | CLB 7 (NOC 0/A) or CLB 5 (NOC B) |
| Federal Skilled Trades | CLB 5 speaking/listening, CLB 4 reading/writing |
| Provincial Nominee Programs | Varies (often CLB 5-7) |
| Canadian Citizenship | CLB 4 |
Strategic CLB Targets
CLB 7 in All Skills
The most common target. Achieves:
- Eligibility for Federal Skilled Worker
- Good Express Entry points
- Most PNP eligibility
CLB 8-9 in All Skills
Higher scores mean significantly more points:
- CLB 7 in all: 68 first-language points
- CLB 8 in all: 92 first-language points
- CLB 9 in all: 124 first-language points
The jump from CLB 7 to CLB 8 adds 24 points — often the difference between receiving an ITA or not.
Mixed Strategies
If one skill is weaker:
- Calculate whether improving it changes your point total
- Consider if retaking makes sense vs. other point sources
- Focus preparation on the weakest skill
Common Conversion Mistakes
Confusing Test Scales
- TCF listening/reading use 100-699 scale
- TCF writing/speaking use 0-20 scale
- TEF uses 0-450 for all skills
Don't mix up which scale applies to which score.
Using Wrong Conversion Table
TCF and TEF have different conversion tables. Ensure you're using the correct one for your test.
Ignoring Skill Boundaries
CLB levels are per-skill, not averaged. You cannot combine a high reading with a low writing to get a medium overall.
Planning for Target CLB Scores
Calculate What You Need
- Determine your target program's minimum CLB
- Calculate how many CRS points you need
- Identify which CLB level achieves that
- Compare to your current level
- Plan study to close the gap
Focus on Weakest Skills
Your overall CLB is limited by your lowest score. Improving your weakest skill has the biggest impact.
Consider Timing
- Plan preparation time realistically
- Book exam when confident of target scores
- Allow buffer for processing and potential retakes
